Meningitis is a bacterial infection that causes swelling of the lining of the brain and spinal cord and blood poisoning.
Symptoms of meningitis include high fever, severe headache, body aches and pains, nausea, cold hands and feet. In more severe cases it can cause hearing loss, nerve damage and stroke, and in some cases, can be fatal.
You should be vaccinated if you are travelling to sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East.
All travellers who are vaccinated against Meningitis ACWY will receive a certificate. All Hajj and Umrah pilgrims are required to show certification of vaccination on arrival in Saudi Arabia.
