Non-Specific Urethritis (NSU)

 

 

Also known as Non-Gonococcal Urethritis (NGU), NSU is a common condition which involves inflammation of the urethra, usually from infection. The condition can be sexually transmitted, however it can also be caused by bacteria within the body moving to the urethra. Typical symptoms in men include:

  • Painful or frequent passing of urine
  • White cloudy discharge from the tip of the penis

 

The condition usually doesn't present symptoms in women.

 

Testing normally comes in two forms:

  • Urine Test - you may be asked not to urinate for at least an hour before providing the smaple
  • Swab Test - a sample of fluid is taken from the urethra
