High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure (hypertension) affects millions of people including children. It is often very difficult to identify the cause of high blood pressure; however the following could increase your risk:

  • Overweight or obese
  • Over the age of 65
  • Lack of exercise
  • High salt or caffeine intake
  • Relatives with the condition

Basic lifestyle changes, such as a reduced salt intake and regular exercise, can often help reduce blood pressure. Where this does not help, medicines may be required. If you have high blood pressure, it is very important you try to reduce it to avoid complications including heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, eye disease and erectile dysfunction.

High Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a fatty substance (lipid) found in the blood and is vital for normal functioning of the cells. As well as being produced by the body, cholesterol is also in the food you eat and too much can cause a build-up in the arteries.

There are two main types of cholesterol:

  • High-density lipoprotein (HDL) carries cholesterol away from cells to the liver and is commonly referred to as ‘good cholesterol’ as higher levels help reduce the risk of a heart attack or stroke.
  • Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) carries cholesterol to the cells but too much can cause a narrowing of the arteries. It is therefore referred to as ‘bad cholesterol’.

Apart from high fat food, cholesterol can be affected by:

  • Being overweight – can lower HDL cholesterol
  • Age – cholesterol rises after the age of 20
  • Being inactive – can lower HDL cholesterol
  • Relatives with high cholesterol

A blood test measuring lipid levels can be used to identify whether or not you have high cholesterol levels. Call us on 02074991581 to book a blood test or to consult a doctor about an existing condition.
