Spirometry

Spiromety is a simple test that measures how much air you can breathe out of your lungs in one forced breath and how quickly you can do it.

It is used to diagnose and monitor certain lung conditions including:

  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Asthma
  • Cycstic Fibrosis
  • Pulmonary Fibrosis

The test involves taking a very deep breath in and then exhaling as quickly and forcefully as you can into a mouthpiece, which forms part of the spirometer. A clip is placed on your nose to stop air escaping. The test is usually repeated to ensure a reliable result.
